Speaker 1:

Welcome everybody to Know Sanity Required. I'm sorry that we're getting this episode up a couple days later than normal, but that's not completely uncommon, it happens a lot, and so thanks for being patient. We're in the middle of our winter swoe Events. We've, since Christmas, we've had winter swoe one, winter swoe two and winter swoe three. In between two and three, we had our annual college conference and that was awesome. We'll be. We mentioned that. We've mentioned it in the last episode or the episode before last, but I wanted to.

Speaker 1:

I wanted to share a message with y'all from winter swoe, from the winter swoe teaching content, and this message will eventually be posted on snowbirds main podcast page and Because at the end of all of our winter swoe conferences will post all of those messages. But I wanted to go ahead and share this one here and just give you some thoughts Before and after that message. It's a message that I shared this past weekend with students from all over the country. In house we probably had 600 people, a lot of staff came in to help out some guests and then several hundred registered students you know that had come to the event, and, and so I wanted to share some, some, some thoughts on a message that that I did on Saturday night and then just share that message with you. I think it'll be encouragement this week and I'll come back at the end and and give you some closing thoughts. But anyway, I want to welcome you again. To no sanity required, it means a lot that you're here. So thanks and welcome.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to no sanity required from the Ministry of Snowbird wilderness outfitters. A podcast about the Bible culture and stories from around the globe.

Speaker 1:

This year, at the the winter swoe conferences and retreats, the teaching theme, the teaching focus, is the miracles of Jesus. Now, if you've come to an event at snowbird, you know that we always have a teaching theme, or what we like to call a focus. I don't like to use the word theme because that's a rabbit hole, don't have to go down, but I like to use the word focus. So we use the word teaching focus when we're in our, in our, in our strategy meetings and planning meetings and and so the idea of a focus is we're taking the theme or the overarching narrative of the gospel in scripture and then we're key and in on or focusing in on one aspect of that. The theme is always Jesus, the theme is always the gospel, and so the focus has to do with a specific Area of teaching. So, for instance, at the end of last summer we had a couple episodes where the teaching team we sat down and talked About the life of Joseph, because we had looked last summer at swoe 23. We looked at the gospel in the life of Joseph, the gospel in Genesis, through the lens of, or through the time period and the Goings on of the life of Joseph. So that was kind of that. You know that was the teaching focus and Now we've come to our winter swoe where what we're focusing on what the teaching focus is. The teaching focus is the miracles of Jesus and we're covering over over the course of the six teaching sessions. We're covering the feeding of the multitude, feeding what's called the feeding of the five thousand. That's our intro sermon on Friday night. Saturday morning is the, the healing of the demoniac that lived in the tombs when Jesus cast the demons out and cast them into the pigs. Then Saturday evening session is the one that I want to share with you today and it's a it's. It's the very follow-up story. When Jesus gets done healing that man from his demonic possession, he goes, gets in the boat, goes across the water and then he gets to the other side and then these people meet him there and they ask him for for help and healing and Jesus performs a couple of miracles there. And then, sunday morning, we follow up with John 5, the healing of the lame man at the pool of Bethesda and where Jesus heals this man who's been a 38 year invalid, which is just a really amazing story. It's just and it's become one of my favorite stories. I've really enjoyed unpacking it and teaching it. Sunday evening we end with Jesus in the storm on the sea and the Sea of Galilee. And so six sermons on six miracles. You know the Jesus perform and there's so many more miracles.

Speaker 1:

But what I want to do is is bring you into this conversation that we had on Saturday night, which is the, the message or the story of Jesus healing, raising back to life the daughter of a synagogue leader named Jairus, and then also the woman who had the issue of blood that came up and touched the hem of Jesus's garment. I want to look at that and I want you to think about. I hope you'll be encouraged with. There's a moment and a challenge, students, with this on Saturday night, there's a moment where this woman has come up from behind Jesus and touched the hem of his garment and Jesus pauses and enters into that moment with this lady, and I want you to be encouraged to think of the moments that Jesus enters into with you. What is, what does your week look like?

Speaker 1:

That's not the main exegetical point of the sermon. The point of the sermon is Jesus's ability to save and heal and raise the dead. You know it's at the end of the story he raises a dead person. But there's this cool moment that just grabbed my attention and Sharing it with students. In it, what wasn't even in my notes and it just really was Was such a picture of God's intentionality and kindness with us, where Jesus stops and he looks at this woman and he enters into this moment with her and he tells her that her Fate has made her well or whole, when he tells her to go in peace, that that she's gonna suffer no more. So hope it'll be an encouragement to you and you'll think about those moments that you might be going through where you need Jesus walking with you in that moment or enter into that moment with you, or Stupid down to look you in the eyes and and feel that aspect of the relationship that we have with Christ.

Speaker 1:

And the second thing that that we really do try to draw out of this the text and the sermon for students is in the sermon or in the text in the story, and mark sick, mark five, rather mark five versus 21 through 43 is what we look at. But this man comes to Jesus and he says, well, you heal my daughter and In the end the, the daughter, is dead by the time Jesus gets there and and there's this really intense Moment where and Matthew covers this as well and in a really intense way where Jesus basically says you believed that I could heal your daughter? Will you have faith that I can raise her from the dead? And it's this really cool, you know, moment where Jesus is calling this man into resurrection, faith. And so I want to share the word with you this morning. There. For me it's morning time, but for this week it's cold here in the mountains and I've been looking and it seems like it's going to be cold everywhere. It looks like even down into Florida, y'all gonna be getting well below freezing. We're gonna hit around zero. So the morning that I'm recording this is snowing pretty good and a lot of snow in the mountains. Kids are excited about getting out of a day of school today and I'm getting ready to, to get the house ready for the, the freeze, the big freeze of 24. So why not just sit back and enjoy some time in the word together? So let's, let's get into the sermon from Saturday evening at winter's whoa.

Speaker 1:

Some of you are artistic, some of you can, some of your creative, some of you need to take a journal. You start writing stuff and you don't know where God might take. Daddy come up with stuff that's like just all that was was an Expression of biblical truth. You know that was cool. Some people not good at writing poetry and I committed to write some poetry a couple years ago and I found out I wasn't real good at it. So what I did do is I started just writing down Like thoughts when I read the Bible and it's been really, it's been a really cool journey for me. So I encourage you to do that.

Speaker 1:

Turn to mark chapter five. We're gonna pick up where the where the guy left off today with the the Wildman, with the pigs. I Enjoyed that sermon a lot. I like that story a lot and I was. I told Spencer I Was laughing so much when he was making like the pig noise and the wolf howl and it was some good. Y'all got some good sound effects in that sermon today, like that was, that was, that was solid, that was next level. But we're gonna pick the story up. Literally, we're gonna just pick up where that story left off.

Speaker 1:

Give you a couple things to think about as we, as we jump into this. We're gonna. So we've considered to this point Everything that we've looked at in the in the miracles of Jesus has been in Story form. We might call that Narrative. Have you ever heard the word narrative? The narrative is a story and you know, we are made like God wired us for story, to tell stories, to listen to stories, to love stories and and I Love the way that the New Testament is laid out in the Gospels the Gospels are what we call those books Matthew, mark, luke and John Because there are a bunch of stories. Listen, there are a bunch of stories telling one big story I think about have you ever watched a show?

Speaker 1:

Have you ever binge watched a show? When I was growing up, you know, back before for the head TVs. Actually, we had TVs, but if you wanted to watch a show and you want to watch the whole season, it took you about seven or eight months and you watch one episode a week and none of the episodes were connected. And old folks Y'all remember this ever once in a while that throw this at the end. They leave you hanging and it would say to be continued. Yeah, I remember that when we were kids and I'd be like, oh man, I gotta wait till next week to watch the rest of this. Nowadays you can do this thing called binge watching, can't you? You watch a whole season. You know the shows that I love the most, the shows where each episode has a story but it ties into the bigger story. Y'all know. What I'm saying Is that y'all know what does that ring about? So like when you can sit down and you can watch an episode and that episode is telling a story, but then all the episodes are tied together to tell a really big story.

Speaker 1:

That's how the Gospels are laid out. It's a story of Jesus feeding these people with fish and bread, that he created fish that had never been in the water. When Rob said that, it was shocking to my imagination. He's serving them fish that had never been in the water. You know why? Cuz he created the fish, cuz he's the creator. The Bible teaches us in Hebrews, chapter 1, that Jesus holds great, spoke, creation Existence, and he holds creation in place by the word of his power. So it's telling a story. It's the story of Jesus, and we moved into that story.

Speaker 1:

This morning Saw Jesus perform crazy, miraculous healing Of this man. Was a spiritual healing as well as a physical healing, wasn't it because that guy he was did? Did you pick up that? He was spiritually sick, he was mentally ill, he was emotionally distraught. And don't miss this. Jesus can heal spiritually and emotionally. He can heal mentally. Jesus can heal people who have mental illness, who have emotional distress, who have anxiety or anxiousness or depression or frustration or fear or doubt. Jesus can heal and address those things. But he also healed this guy physically because think about this Do you remember the part of story the guy was cutting himself? And then they come up there and they see him sitting there. They don't recognize him. You know what I think happened? I think Jesus healed that dude from top to bottom, set him free from demons, but he also healed him. And so we've got these stories that are building and tying together the bigger story of who Jesus is.

Speaker 1:

Tonight we're gonna see two more stories that it's kind of it's like a story within a story, two stories. It's one story that gets interrupted, but it's just more about who Jesus is, and so we'll pick the story up when we left it off last, last or this morning. So that'll be mark chapter 5, and let's start in verse 21. We're just gonna walk through these verses Mark 5, 21 Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. Then a leader of the local synagogue whose name was Jairus or Jairus I don't know exactly how you say that hint from Western North Carolina. I know that they ain't nobody named that in my graduating class. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet Pleading fervently with him. My little daughter is dying. He said please come and lay your hands on her, heal her so she can live. Jesus went with him and all the people followed, crowding around him.

Speaker 1:

So let's take some observations from these first few verses. This sets the stage, it sets the story up. So this guy, this guy Jairus or Jairus, he, he, he comes to Jesus and I want you to notice. First observation is that as he comes up to Jesus, he bows down to him, so he has a respect for Jesus and this is there's some contrast between this and the story from this morning. Remember when the man this morning ran up to Jesus, the demons that are like inside of that man, remember they cried out and they're like don't hurt us, don't mess with us. They recognize Jesus's power. So you could say they respected and feared Jesus, but this man's fear looks different, and I want to pause right here. This is not the main point of this text, but I want to point something out to y'all and and for our staff that have heard this sermon before Because this is winter swath three I haven't, I haven't pointed this out before something that the Lord, I think, just is helping me and it jumped out at me.

Speaker 1:

One of the things that we have to wrestle with as believers is what does it mean to fear the Lord? Have you ever heard this? That we're to, we're to fear the Lord. The Bible says in the Psalms and the Bible says in one One of the Proverbs. It says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of understanding. So we need to fear the Lord. It's important that his believers, we, fear the Lord, but the way I fear the Lord is different from the way the demons fear God. Do you see what I'm saying? Don't confuse that. There are different types of fear, different types of fear. The fear that I have of the Lord is a fear that drives me to him Because there's security in his presence. Y'all tracking with that. I Know I need, I need to volunteer.

Speaker 1:

But I'm gonna ask is my kid, is my son Moses, here? Is Mo back stage, little, is Mo back there? Or my Mo where you at? Oh man, he's on, he's loose. Come here, dude, I got you. Come on, I can't see who is this. Yeah, come on up. I can't hear, I can't see. I'm just an old dude. You come on right here, grab my hand, I'll pull you up. What's your name? Kellen? Come here. Kellen. One, two, three, wait, tell me again. Kellen, c-u-l-l-e-n. How tall are you? Four foot eight. How much you weigh? Do you know? 71. 71, and this corner weighing in is 71, four foot eight. Let's come on. Let's come on the nickname Mad Dog, something like that.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so this is gonna be super quick, but I want you to imagine that there was a threat that came through the door. Okay, what I would do is I would take Kellen and I would put him behind me. Okay, wave it, everybody. Kellen, hey guys, hey everybody. Okay, now, if there was something. Okay, I'm a pretty big fellow, you see that.

Speaker 1:

Okay, if there was some bad guy back there, would this be a pretty good spot for you? Yeah, that'd be all right, wouldn't it? And if I said to you hey, don't worry, I got this, I'll take care of him, would you feel secure? You feel safe, wouldn't you? All right, that's a safe place to be. Now, what about if I said let's me and you fight? I would not. You don't wanna do that, do you? You're awesome, can you get down by yourself? Of course you can. Okay, so the point. Thanks, kellen, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1:

So the point that I wanna make right there is there's two levels of fear we're unpacking right there. One is a fear of whatever that is that's gonna come do me harm. I know the safest place I can get is behind someone that can protect me. Y'all tracking with that. The safest place you can live your life when it comes to peer pressure, when it comes to the things that you deal with on a weekly, daily, hourly basis in your world, is to hide behind the cross of Christ Jesus, to hide behind the person of Christ Jesus I'm gonna talk to you about how you do that but to live your life in step with Jesus, allowing him to fight your battles. But then, when I turned to Kellen, I said do we wanna fight? He's like no, that's like common sense. He's a kid right, like one day he'll be able to wear me out, but not today. But with Jesus it's that same. I don't wanna fight him, I wanna hide behind him. I don't wanna be against him, I want him to be for me. Y'all tracking with me, okay?

Speaker 1:

So Jairus walks up to Jesus and the first observation is he bows down to Jesus and there's a fear there. That's what biblical, pure, healthy, godly fear looks like. Are y'all following that? Okay, that's very different than the fear the demons had this morning, isn't it? They're screaming, they're right, oh, what do you have to do with us, jesus of Nazareth? They're freaking out and Jesus is like boom, he deals with them. He deals with them, but with Jairus, let's watch the reaction that Jesus has to him. He had great respect for Jesus. He bowed down. He shows what fear looks like, okay. And then it says that he's pleading with Jesus about his daughter who is dying.

Speaker 1:

And so the next observation and these first few verses is that he was desperate, and that desperation is evident by the fact that he's asking Jesus for help. It's a biblical principle, it's a principle of salvation. Only when I get to a point of desperation where I would cry out to Jesus, asking him to do what only he can do to save me from my sin, to save me from my circumstances, to save me from my situation. That's what this man's doing. This man's at a point where he's crying out to Jesus, asking him to do what only Jesus can do. He'd come to this point where he recognized that he couldn't help himself and Jesus was his only hope. I wanna point something out before we move on about his faith, because he clearly has faith.

Speaker 1:

You don't know what faith is right. Faith is you put your trust, your faith, in something. You're leaning into that and believing in that for something great. If you wrote the three-man swing today, you believed into those cables to protect you right, like we know what faith is. You believe that the chair is gonna hold you up, but I want you to see that Jeres' faith is feeble and faltering. And this is helpful because I think a lot of times we feel like our faith is insufficient, that we should have some kind of perfect faith, that we should be like the pastor, my pastor. He's strong. You know this spiritual person in my life. It could be a parent or someone you look up to like man. I don't ever have faith like that person.

Speaker 1:

Listen, faith is not defined by the strength of the faith. Are y'all tracking with me? Faith is when I lean into Christ and put my trust in Him, and I want you to see that this man's faith is faltering, it's feeble. We're gonna see those of you who are here tomorrow night we're gonna see in the story of Peter's life. We're gonna see him wrestle at times. His faith is so strong, at times it's so weak. Part of the Christian journey is that at times your faith is going to feel very feeble and that's when you have to remember the strength doesn't come from your faith. The strength comes from the one. Your faith is in this man's. What this man's doing is with feeble faith. He's leaning into Jesus. So listen, that's an intense moment.

Speaker 1:

Jesus steps off the boat. Last time he stepped off the boat, what happened? Crazy dude. Oh, remember that guy. I love the way Spencer laid that out. Got to come front of him. He's like this time, jesus, can you imagine being Jesus? And everywhere you go, it's like I wonder what's gonna happen when we get off the boat. This time it's always something you know. And this guy comes up and he bows down. There's a really cool contrast right here that I wanna point out.

Speaker 1:

At the end of the story this morning, what did the people of that village ask Jesus to do? Do you remember Leave? Is that what you was gonna say? You raised your hand, thank you. Was that what you were gonna say? Yeah, yeah, they asked him to leave. Please just leave. Contrast that with what Jeres is saying Please come with me. You see that it's the opposite. You'll see this in the Bible. A lot contrast. These people this morning are like just go away. And this man's falling down with feeble faith, saying please come. Only you can help, only you can give me what I need. So Jesus goes with him and the crowds press in the end of people always around Jesus.

Speaker 1:

A woman in the crowd has suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal for many doctors and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe, for she thought to herself, if I can just touch his robe, I will be healed. This is an intense moment. Let me set this up, this woman, without going into the details, in this culture, the disease that this woman had would have rendered her an outcast of society. An outcast of society, remember, during COVID, right at the beginning of COVID, and nobody really knew what. You know, there's all kinds of crazy stories.

Speaker 1:

I remember I was the week that COVID kind of went ballistic, and some of y'all probably a little young to even remember this I mean middle schoolers but the week I can remember that week I had a couple of flights that week that flew to West I went up to West Virginia and then my son and I flew to Fort Lauderdale and so I had two flights that week. And remember I was in West Virginia and a person said we went into a restaurant and we're hearing about COVID and it's like there's nobody in here. And remember the server came over and like had her think. You know she's like, oh yeah, can I help you guys? And I'm like what is going on? Cause I just had my head in the sand, I wasn't paying attention to what was going on.

Speaker 1:

And remember we were having a conversation around that meal and the one lady that it was a group of people eating. And this one lady said oh yeah, I heard that. I heard that. Let me tell you something. Anytime somebody starts a sentence with I heard, or anytime somebody starts a sentence with, they say first off, that's a Southern thing, we do that down here. I don't know why. It's like I heard they say what's going to follow is probably not completely true. It's probably not completely. I saw on Facebook Anybody grandmama say that. I saw Facebook. This lady said I heard if you walk in a room where somebody's got that COVID, that everyone in the room will instantly have it. I remember she said that and so everybody just freaked out about it.

Speaker 1:

I remember on this flight coming out of Fort Lauderdale, this dude gets on the flight and he takes it like a coffin fit and people are like trying to stick their heads under their seats. Everybody thinks I don't know what this guy's got, but we're all going to die. On this flight this guy's like. You know somebody gets choked up. Clearly something went down the wrong pipe. You know what I mean. And this guy's just choking Everybody's like. I remember people are mad and yelling at him get off the plane. I was like my man choking on a cheese fry or something. Just give him a break, just give him a break.

Speaker 1:

But to be for everyone in society to turn on you because they think you're a threat, because you're a victim of a disease, that's what this woman was living with. Outcast, completely alone. She ain't no, nobody, like, no relationships that we can see, that we can tell. That's her condition and here's what she thinks. Here's faith. If I could get to Jesus and touch one thread on his robe, I bet you it'll heal me. Now we could unpack that and talk about. She probably didn't have a really good understanding of how Jesus operated, you know, she probably thought he's like some kind of powerful wizard or something. I don't know at first. But she, as the story unfolds, and somewhere along her journey, she began to believe that he was much more than a great healer. Because we see it in her humility, in the way that she comes up and approaches Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Jesus realized it's a verse 29,. This is immediately the bleeding stopped and she could feel in her body that she'd been healed of her terrible condition Immediately. Listen to me, y'all, when Jesus heals people, you don't ever see them have to go through like nine months of physical therapy. You know what I'm saying. It's not like Jesus healed me and then I got in to see a good therapist and I had to work, you know, walk on crutches for a while and then I had to take this medication. When Jesus heals people, it's crazy because it'll often say immediately, immediately, this woman is instantly healed.

Speaker 1:

Jesus realized that once the healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked who touched my robe. His disciples said to him look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask who touched me? But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her daughter your faith has made you well, go and peace, your suffering is over. Immediately he healed her and he said your suffering is over, you will suffer no more.

Speaker 1:

Couple of observations from this. This woman was broke and alone. It says she had spent everything she had on doctors who couldn't help her. And I wanna add to her story the same thing we saw with Jairus, which is, I think, her faith is feeble, it's faltering. She doesn't have a bold faith where she marches through the crowd and looks Jesus in the eyes. She crawls up behind and touches the hem of his robe, but it's a faith that drives action. It's really cool because in that we also see the gentleness and the kindness and the compassion of Jesus. He stops I love this. He stops and he has a moment with her. He has a moment with her.

Speaker 1:

Imagine, first off, imagine time travel. Let's all just, we've all done that. I grew up in the back to the future era. Time travel would be so. It would be so fun. As long as I could come back here, cause I like the creature comforts of 2024. I ain't gonna lie, but I like to travel around Like I like to go. I like to go to see some folks in some different time periods and imagine having a moment with Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Can I just try to draw you into that moment, a moment where, with shaking hands and wobbly knees and a broken voice that can barely speak, because you're so in awe and overwhelmed at the presence of the one who would be the savior of the world and a fate so feeble that you would just go up and touch the thread on the hem of his garment and then he stops and he notices. You, look at me, y'all. Jesus notices her. She makes eye contact with the one who put life in her body, who put breath in her lungs, who suspends creation and holds our solar system in place, who makes the grass grow and the seasons change and the oceans roar and storm so powerful that they knock power out for about 15 hours. Amen, and we survived it anyway. That one that can do all of that stops everything, leaves it all in motion. Gravity didn't stop, the planet didn't stop turning, the sun didn't stop shining. But for a moment.

Speaker 1:

She has a moment face to face with that guy, with that guy, and I want you to come into that moment, because what the gospel teaches us is that Jesus says to each one of us come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest for your weary souls. We live in crazy times, man. We live in a broken world, we live in a jacked up world. But here's what's so amazing. Jesus would later say to the people around him I'm going to leave, you're not going to have any more of these moments with me, but I'm going to do something better than that. I'm going to take the spirit that is currently guiding me, step by step, breath by breath, every moment of my earthly, physical incarnation, life as a human. I'm going to take that spirit and I'm going to put it inside of you.

Speaker 1:

He tells us disciples it's better that I go away, because if I go away, I'll send my Holy Spirit to be with you so that, literally every single day, you can have your moment or moments with Jesus. Then, when you sit down on the end of your bed and you let your request be made known to him, he hears them. That when you open God's word expectantly, he speaks to you. Then, when you sing these songs that we're singing and you lift your voice, in that moment it's not 500 of us, or 300 of us or 50 of us, it's Jesus in me, connected through worship. He cares for you. Even the hairs on your head are numbered. He could right now, boom, tell you how many times your heart is going to beat over the span of your life. He knows that about you, which means he knows what scares you, he knows what makes you anxious, he knows what freaks you out and he knows what you need to feel okay, secure, joyful, satisfied in Christ. He'll give it to you. She has a moment with Jesus. It changes her life. If you've never had a moment with Jesus like that, that's the starting point, where you confess that Jesus is Lord and you put your faith in, your trust in him. It changed your life for eternity. She has this moment. But Jesus got places to go and people to see and heal, and so he's got to keep moving. So we're almost done. We get to verse 35. While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jerus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him your daughter is dead. No, you're struggling to teach her now.

Speaker 1:

Ah, don't like negative people, I just don't like to be around. Yeah, I've been around negative people. Hey, how you doing Ffff? And then they tell you everything is bad about life. You ever been around somebody like that? How you doing? I don't know, man, everything ain't perfect, but I know Jesus loves me and I've been saved by grace, so that's a pretty good deal. You know like that needs to be our response Negative people, negative, negative, negative. We should be positive. That's another sermon, that's another day. That's people coming up like, well, no use coming, now she dead. But first off, how insensitive. Are these idiots? Idiots.

Speaker 1:

As a pastor, I've had the honor but the overwhelming, grieving responsibility of preaching the memorials and funerals of young people who have died, from six weeks old to 16 years old. It's horrible, like if there's anything people need in that moment, it's sensitivity, it's kindness, it's gentleness, and my man, jerus, is not getting that. It's just harsh and crass. Well, your daughter's dead. You tell this cat, your man, jesus here. I don't know, I don't, but he can go on and do something else because your daughter's dead. There's no use troubling the teacher. Now. Let me tell you something.

Speaker 1:

Young people, you are never a bother to Jesus. He loves you. He died for you. He desires for you to know him. He will make himself known to you. He will stop in every moment of every day and look you in the eyes and feel your soul and your spirit with joy and give you what you need in every single moment. He's never too busy for you. He is never troubled by you. That's the beauty of grace and the personal nature of the gospel of our Savior. He's not troubled by this. I'm so glad Jesus doesn't respond the way I do.

Speaker 1:

If I was Jesus, I'd be like exercise my power for just to make a mute Like, and then guys would be like, hey, there's no use to that. There's people I like to do that to. That'd be a good trick right there, when they think they're talking and they're moving and they're just trying to figure out why ain't nobody responding Like, because that's what people do when you're running your mouth, Nobody really pays attention to what you're saying. But he doesn't do that, he's too kind. It says that Jesus overheard them and he said to Jerus don't be afraid, just have faith. I want to bring you to what I believe is the most pivotal moment in the story. What Jesus has done is he's remember when Jerus came to Jesus and he bowed down, was his faith strong or feeble? It was feeble. And what did he ask Jesus to do? Please come make my daughter. Well, please come, heal my daughter. And Jesus, right now, he's gone from this moment with this woman. Now he's entered into this moment. This is Jerus' moment and you know what Jesus says to him you believe for me to heal your daughter? Will you believe in me for resurrection? You, whatever you think about Jesus, it has to start and stop with believing in the power of his resurrection, because it's like Jesus, will you heal my daughter? She's sick. That's a way different request than Jesus. My daughter's dead Jesus is saying you believe me for healing? Do you believe me for resurrection? I don't know how big your faith is in Jesus. I don't know what you think he's capable of, but he's capable of raising the dead.

Speaker 1:

That's power. That's power. We heated y'all's cabins with seven generators last night because the storm knocked it out. You know we had a team of four dudes that love our teams. No bird's full of the best people in the world. Man, I love our team. These four, five, six cats stayed up all night making sure that, while you're sleeping, they're making sure the generators are running. Two of them are electricians, one of them's a master electrician. Making sure all the connections, all the powers running, that the cabins are warm, because it's 27 degrees 26 degrees this morning. Making sure we gotta manage the power, make sure that everyone has the power they need.

Speaker 1:

Jesus possesses a power so great that he can raise the dead and he's asking this man to believe in it. Love this moment. Jesus is stretching his feeble faith. Last section. Then Jesus stopped the crowd. I just hit my time limit 30 minutes. Okay, we'll wrap this quickly. You're good, can you hang with me for one more? The concluding thought. Can we do that? Concluding thought, verse 37,.

Speaker 1:

Jesus stopped the crowd, wouldn't let anyone go with them except Peter, james and John, the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. People are just broken over the death of this child. He went inside and asked while his commotion and weeping, the child isn't dead, she's only asleep. The crowd laughed at him, but he made them all leave. Another point there people will find your faith. At times, even comical Crowds just like laughing. Like what is this clown show? He makes them leave.

Speaker 1:

He took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying, holding her hand. He said to her Talitha Khoom, which means little girl, get up. And the girl, who was 12 years old, paul's and do we remember was dead, 12 years old, 12 years dead, like she's dead. Y'all know what dead. Y'all, we're all familiar with what it means to be dead. Right, none of us have ever been that. None of us have ever been that, but we've all experienced it in some way.

Speaker 1:

The loved one, a grandparent, she was dead and the girl, who was 12 years old, immediately there's that word again immediately stood up and walked around. They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened. I love this part. And then this is just the humanity of it all. And then he told them to give her something to eat. I imagine being dead would make you really hungry.

Speaker 1:

You ever been sick, you finally get well and you're like I gotta eat so much food right now. Give her something to eat, take care of her. You know why? Because the little things matter to Jesus, and one time he said this was in the Sermon on the Mount. He said hey, I'm gonna make sure you have food, I'm gonna make sure you have what you need.

Speaker 1:

In case you ever question that or doubt that, I feed the birds. I read something this past week birds don't deal with anxiety or depression. They just get up, they chirp, they fly, they go, they eat and God provides. He provides her needs right here, and I love it. It's so cool. It's this moment of humanity. Jesus displays power over illness and death, but also the power to save someone who has feeble but real faith. Tonight, if you. If we will respond to Jesus by putting our faith in him, he'll save us. And if you're already a Christian, he'll grow your faith from feeble to strong. He'll strengthen and he'll stretch you. I hope that sermon excuse me was an encouragement to you and maybe you're able to slow it down and jot down some notes and we'll share some main points and observations in the show notes.

Speaker 1:

We'll link up some just main points and ideas, kind of a summary or breakdown. It's interesting and I mentioned this in the sermon, but comparing the response of the people with the fish and loaves they just wanted more food the next day, you know. And then you look at the man who was healed by the demoniac, or the man that was healed by Jesus, who was a demoniac, who was demon possessed. The people in that town asked Jesus to leave. So you got the contrast of people saying, oh, jesus did a miracle, he fed us food. Hey, can we have some more food? And then Jesus, you know, if you go back and read John six, he's like okay, here's the deal. You need something more than physical food. You need to take part in my flesh and my blood and my body.

Speaker 1:

And people kind of freak out. Then the people in this town where Jesus has healed this madman, they freak out and they ask Jesus to leave. But then we get to this moment where Jairus and the woman come to Jesus seeking his saving and healing power. Jairus even says will you come with me? So it's a cool contrast and a challenge for us this week to are we gonna live our lives in a way where we say, jesus, will you come to me, will you walk with me, will you go with me? I wanna be led by you, I want you to enter into my circumstances and I wanna trust you for what I need in my day to day circumstances Good reminder, and so it was an encouragement to you this week.
